R4 in Las Vegas at Mandalay Bay

Ruth, Martin and business partner and CEO Paul Reitz visited Las Vegas last month for the annual RE/MAX Real Estate Convention, thousands of RE/MAX Affiliates rub shoulders with - and learn from - the best real estate agents in the industry: their RE/MAX colleagues. These real estate agents make valuable business contacts and form friendships that can last a lifetime. They gain insight from real estate industry trainers and economic experts, and pick up dozens of strategies and techniques that they can put into action to better serve their clients and earn more money. The convention is now known as RE/MAX R4, with the four R’s being Reignite, Reconnect, Recognize and Rediscover.

Ruth and Paul were able to explain the difference between the "old" free, QR codes which often link to sites which don't work correctly on mobile devices, and the new and improved ConnectCode system which allows Real Estate professionals to create an on-the-fly mobile "cloud app" for each and every property listing.

Guitar Master Class

The Women and Cancer Fund is a not-for-profit charity led by Dr. Alicia Alvarez and established in the memory of Linda McCartney. "Let Us In" Nashville, a campaign led by Reviver Music to raise awareness and proceeds for this charity which promotes prevention, lifestyle awareness, enhances available health services and advocates both advanced breast cancer and children's cancer research.

It was a fundraiser held at a private home in the Hollywood Hills, by invitation only which Ruth, Martin and Angie were delighted to attend.

From Martin's log: "Well, all I can say is that it was my month for Guitar Virtuosos. We worked with Slash for the 360 video production of his album with clients last month, and then we were invited to this special benefit performance of three guitar greats: Richie Sambora, Tommy Emmanuel and Laurence Juber. The evening featured an intimate "show and tell" of guitar techniques, song writing and musical composition. Needless to say, I learned a lot about the craft of guitar playing and hopefully I'm becoming a better player / artist because of it."

University Of Richmond - Robins School Of Business

Ruth and Martin visited with the University of Richmond - Robins School Of Business, where Ruth lectured on Social Media and its impact on corporate strategy and governance, as well as next-generation QR codes and of course a little bit about where it all began for the Digital Diva - helping organize the Beatles' Fan Club on the kitchen table in Liverpool as a child. Our gracious host, Nancy Bagranoff, Dean of the prestigious Robins School, made our journey to The Commonwealth of Virginia most comfortable by arranging a wonderful stay at The Jefferson Hotel in downtown Richmond.

Notes from Martin's travel log:
Our journey to the East Coast started with Virgin America flying us from LAX to Washington Dulles. From there we took a rental car down to Richmond. On the way we stopped in the beautiful town of Fredericksburg and went for a wander around the old historic district. If your travels ever take you to Fredericksburg, I highly recommend you stop by the Capital Ale House. As many of you know I am from Germany, and I must say I had one of the best meals there of the entire trip. Imagine, a Schnitzel sandwich inside a pretzel bun with sauerkraut and gravy! Delicious. Whilst walking through the quaint historic district it's hard to imagine that not too long ago over 200,000 men did battle in the streets. It was the first recorded urban combat of the Civil War.

Richmond Virginia

As mentioned, the Jefferson Hotel made us most welcome. Located in charming downtown Richmond, their highly trained, discreet staff gives you the ultimate experience in southern hospitality, the rooms are sumptuous and the hotel lobby is a sight to behold. It felt more like a vacation than work. But, work we did.

Ruth's thoughts on the trip:
Having never attended college, imagine my nerves before stepping on stage at this tony beacon of higher education. The Robins School has a very diverse and international set of students, as well as a stellar faculty and absolutely breathtaking campus with dogwoods, cherry trees and even their own private lake! The hour zipped by quickly and was followed by a lovely reception organized by Dean Bagranoff and the über efficient and charming Ms. Andi Minor. Thanks to all.

Washington D.C.

Thanks to our good friend Pat Roxworthy we had a splendid stay at the Hyatt in Arlington on our way back from Richmond. We had another day before our flight back to L.A., so we went to see the White House. It's really smaller than you think! Following our whirlwind tour, we were fortunate enough to catch up with the enigmatic and philanthropic Bill Chatfield and his colleagues Jim Hatch of Marcom Group and Jay Udavcak of Big Picture Group, for a brainstorming session about the Government and military sectors, technology and how we might better serve our returning veterans, by assisting them in transitioning into the job market. All in all, we had a wonderful trip and we want to thank everyone for making us so welcome.

In memoriam - Jim Marshall

It was the physical embodiment of rock's power and majesty — a wall of black, vinyl-clad cabinets, one atop the other, crowned with a rectangular box containing the innovative circuitry that revolutionized the music.

This was the famed Marshall stack, the amplification gear that has dominated rock stages since its introduction in the early 1960s, bestowing on guitarists the ability to achieve unprecedented volume and controlled distortion.

From the Who, Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix in the 1960s on through Peter Frampton, Van Halen, AC/DC, Motley Crue, Guns N' Roses and Nirvana in succeeding decades, the cursive "Marshall" emblazoned on the speakers has served as an inescapable backdrop signature.

The Marshall stack was so much larger than life that it lent itself to excess as well. The famous amp in the mockumentary "Spinal Tap" with a unique setting of 11 on the dial was a Marshall, and no rock image was more over-the-top than that of KISS' four members performing in front of some 40 Marshall cabinets.

Of course, they didn't need that many.

"Hendrix used three 100-watt amps and three stacks," their inventor Jim Marshall once said. "KISS go a lot further, but most of the cabinets and amps you see on stage are dummies. We once built 80 dummy cabinets for Bon Jovi. They all do it — it's just backdrop.

"It would be stupid to use more than three 100-watt amps, wherever and whoever you are."

Marshall died Thursday at 88 in an English hospice after suffering from cancer and several severe strokes, his son Terry Marshall told the Associated Press. Musicians, competitors and fans were quick to salute Marshall, who had retained an active role at Marshall Amplification well into his 80s.

Today marks the 50th anniversary of the death of Stuart Sutcliffe. There is a new book out today, on limited release via his new website.
There is to be a special celebration of his life and work at the Liverpool Museum today to mark the occasion. 

In Conversation with Stuart Sutcliffe
This special edition book (limited run only!) celebrates the life and work of Stuart Sutcliffe, the legendary fifth member of The Beatles and renowned artist. Published to commemorate the 50th anniversary of his death, it discusses and affirms his lasting significance and relevance.
'In Conversation with Stuart Sutcliffe, his life, work and relevance', consists of numerous unseen images of Stuart’s work ‘in conversation’ with a number of today’s brightest artistic talent; pondering and discussing artistic, critical, sociological, poetic and personal responses to Stuart’s life and work. Stuart's art is discussed, commented on and reflected upon, by the words and work of other artists for the first time!

In honor of Martin's birthday, we spent the day at Rock'n Brews in El Segundo, celebrating the day after the grand opening where awareness and funds were raised for the Wounded Warrior project.

EL SEGUNDO (CBS) — Rock legend and reality TV star Gene Simmons is putting his money where his famous tongue is with the launch of a new chain of restaurants.
Partnering up with veteran concert promoter Dave Furano and local restaurant owner/brewmaster Michael Zislis, the trio opened their first Rock & Brews on El Segundo’s Main Street on April 3.
The chain’s concept’s theme calls on the excitement of being backstage at a concert, according to a news release. The menu will offer appetizers as “Opening Acts,” “VIP” salads, “Headliner” sandwiches, “Front Row” pizzas and “Encores” desserts.
The restaurant will feature more than 40 craft beers on tap, according to a news release, with hundreds more available in the bottle or can, along with red and white wine offerings.
Rock & Brews restaurants are being touted as being family and dog friendly, with a play area for kids and a large open-air area where pets can hang out.
El Segundo’s Rock & Brews’ grand opening will be hosted by Simmons, Furano and Zislis and will benefit the Wounded Warrior Project.
Plans are already in place for more Rock & Brews locations throughout Los Angeles, Maui, Denver, Atlanta, Tokyo and Los Cabos.

Long time clients, still going from strength to strength, not only with their Vegas show, but Penn Gillette is making a mark on The Celebrity Apprentice on Sunday nights, and still holding his own. 
Penn & Teller are now a Las Vegas staple. They have their own theater at the Rio and they are one of the hottest tickets in town. They have been performing together for over 30 years.
If you haven’t had the pleasure of seeing them in one of their live shows, you may have seen them on television in one of their many specials. For those of you not familiar, Penn is the bigger and much louder one who pretty much does all the talking. Teller is his small and silent, yet equally funny, partner.
Their rapport with each other shines on stage; the audience can tell it is a performance relationship that takes years of dedication and practice.

Corbin Bleu to play Jesus in Godspell on Broadway starting mid April.

Godspell is a musical by Stephen Schwartz and John-Michael Tebelak. It opened off Broadway on May 17, 1971, and has played in various touring companies and revivals many times since, including a 2011 revival now playing on Broadway. Several cast albums have been released over the years and one of its songs, "Day by Day" from the original cast album, reached #13 on the Billboard pop singles chart in the summer of 1972.
The structure of the musical is that of a series of parables, based on the Gospel of Matthew (though three of the parables featured are recorded only in the Gospel of Luke). These are then interspersed with a variety of modern music set primarily to lyrics from traditional hymns, with the passion of Christ treated briefly near the end of the performance. It started as a college project performed by students at Carnegie Mellon University and moved to La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club in Greenwich Village. It was then re-scored for an off-Broadway production which became a long-running success. A junior one-act version with some songs removed has also been made under the title Godspell Junior.

Recipe of The Month

Ruth's Lemon Herb Dressing (Vegan)

3 tablespoons lemon juice
Zest of one lemon
1/2 cup olive oil
2 tablespoons of stone ground or Dijon mustard
1 teaspoon chopped fresh tarragon
1 tablespoon chopped fresh oregano
1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley
1 tablespoon chopped fresh chives
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper
Dash of red pepper flakes if you like spicy.

Whisk together all ingredients until well blended; chill stored in an airtight mason jar or re-cycled water bottle.

Great on:
Bruschetta, fish, chicken, as a dip with tapas, fennel and arugula salad... pretty much anything!
