Welcome to the Volume 24 edition of the McCartney Newsletter.
Lots of stuff to talk about, so let's get right to it:
American Accounting Association Conference (Eastern and Western Region)
Ruth recently spoke on the subject of Big Data to 2 regional meetings of The American Accounting Association, which is the largest community of accountants in academia. Founded in 1916, they have a rich and reputable history built on leading-edge research and publications. The diversity of the membership creates a fertile environment for collaboration and innovation. Collectively, they shape the future of accounting through teaching, research and a powerful network, ensuring their position as thought leaders in accounting.

Southeast Region Meeting : St. Petersburg, Florida
It was Martin's birthday and what better way to celebrate than going somewhere you haven't been before? After Ruth's presentation about "Big Data", we visited the downtown district of St. Pete and took in the Andy Warhol exhibit and then the amazing Dali collection at the Dali Museum. What a great day of art and insights into Dali's tangled mind. Seeing the paintings up close and personal, and with the excellent free audio guide, was a real eye opener.
If you don't know the story behind Dali's "Lincoln" painting, check it out here. The nights were warm, the people were very friendly and the restaurants were amazing. (See below for our "Restaurant of the Month" section). Thank you for a great time, St. Pete. We'll be back for sure!
Western Region Meeting :Salt Lake City - Park City, Utah
Having just recently seen the let's just say "eclectic" Book Of Mormon musical here in L.A., I have to admit it was with a little anxiety that we embarked on our trip to Salt Lake City, Utah.
In the book according to Matt & Trey, Utah gets an unnecessary bad rap.
Notwithstanding the trepidation, we had a wonderful time in both SLC and Park City, the people were friendly, always having a smile on their faces and the city, especially downtown is amazing. We even found a "speak easy" underneath a bodega where you can order a drink called the "Bourdain." We won't disclose the location, because some things you just have to discover by yourself.
We enjoyed great food and visited Temple Square where we had the chance to witness the Mormon Tabernacle Choir at rehearsal. What a sound, what an experience!
After Ruth's speech, we headed up to Park City, (famous for its Sundance Film Festival) and enjoyed a couple of days of relaxation in the snow. If you're ever up there, check out "The Caledonian" managed condos. Full kitchens, laundry in the unit, Jacuzzis on the deck overlooking the ski lifts and Main Street and a great steak house on the ground floor. They have great rates when you go off-season.
All in all, we'd like to thank all the participants at the conference and the state of Utah for making us so welcome. It's another place we will visit again for sure!
Thanks again to Julie Smith David and the AAA HQ Team for organizing a great conference!

McCartney NetWork News - (because it's all about YOU)
MyCircles.com Founder and CEO Leon Gomez stopped by from Florida to visit the L.A. support branch (i.e. McCartney Multimedia). MyCircles.com is a brand new concept in Social Dating. Imagine if Facebook and Match.com had a baby ~ only waaaaay cooler!
During his visit Leon had various meetings with industry people and investors in Los Angeles. The site will see its official launch by the end of May.
Living In Pictures is an American rock band from Los Angeles, consisting of vocalist/bassist Jerry Gonzalez, guitarist Mike Burawski, and drummer Shane Scanlon. Their debut EP is currently being recorded and is expected to be released in the spring of 2014.
So far, five songs have been recorded and mixed. More songs are in the mixing process and are expected to be complete soon. The band is meeting regularly and working on writing new material. The group is currently lining up performances in the Los Angeles area to promote the release of their first EP.

The L.A.-based jazz seductress Joanne Tatham takes us on a joyride of cinematic New York in her highly acclaimed cabaret concert "Soundtrack New York." This fast-paced guided tour of songs from films shot on the streets of Manhattan was last seen at the Cafe Carlyle in October.
"Soundtrack New York" features a veritable skyline of songs from such films as "West Side Story," "Tootsie," "Rosemary’s Baby," "Breakfast at Tiffany’s" "Funny Girl," "Midnight Cowboy," and "New York, New York."
Woman Around Town’s Alix Cohen called "Soundtrack New York" "a smart, wonderfully researched, entertaining show… Tatham is classy and accessible… an exceptional artist."
Angie is featured in the award-winning documentary Good Ol' Freda, a film about the Beatles' manager Brian Epstein's secretary Freda Kelly. But Freda was so much more than that. She ran the Liverpool office, the official Beatles Fan Club, wrangled the boys for autographs, kept the screaming fans happy with insider info in her newsletters and became the friend to the fans.
This fascinating film also features guests including our own Angie. We're thrilled to learn that it is showing on Delta and Virgin flights in May so now you can get your Angie fix at 30 thousand feet!
Another dear friend and colleague, Chris Alan, is launching a day at Santa Monica Airport on 18th May showing eco (gas free) cars, which promises to be a fun occasion. Clover Park, on the north side of Santa Monica Airport is a great little place, close to the museum of flying, old aircraft, a restaurant called The Spitfire Grill, with lots of World War II memorabilia and good grub.

Dawn Bowery's beautiful coffee table book "California Dreaming - Real Life Stories of Brits in L.A." has just arrived from the printer and features Angie and Ruth. The impressive launch party at L'Ermitage was a star-studded event, and featured a gallery of all the photographs in the book. Congrats to Dawn and all the #Britweek and Visit California folks involved.
From Dawn's web site:
"The subjects of California Dreaming are as diverse and surprising as Los Angeles itself. Over these last three years I have been on a remarkable journey and have made some lifelong friends along the way. Each shoot has taken me out of my comfort zone and all over this magical city.
From actors to acrobats, butlers to boxers, I hope the stories of those who left home for the adventure of Los Angeles will inspire, entertain, and move you. May you grab every opportunity to follow your own dreams, whatever they may be and wherever they take you enjoy your own unique journey."
On our travels we have encountered many restaurants, tasted many menus and have enjoyed many different environments. So, with our recent trip to St. Petersburg FL, we felt that the Acropolis Taverna should get a big nod in our newsletter as a standout location. We were only there three days but we visited twice, including celebrating Martin's birthday. If you're ever in the St. Pete area, this one is really worth a trip.
From their web site: "Acropolis Greek Taverna serves St. Petersburg and surrounding areas. It features a full bar, casual "tavern-style" dining and entertainment. Located in the heart of downtown St. Pete. This location also hosts nightly entertainment including bouzouki and belly dancing."
Recipe of The Month
Ruth's Beatles-Themed Recipes
Continuing with the Fab Four theme, here's a great salad, which Martin and I order every time we see it on a menu. It's become a running joke with a Facebook and Instagram friend who goes crazy every time we post a picture of yet another beet salad... well after eating so many of this delicious, nutritious veggie's variations, I decided to make it and home and here's my version...
Meet The Beets
2 whole beets (I like 1 red, 1 golden), ends trimmed, leave skins on.
1 tablespoon olive oil
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon freshly cracked black pepper
1/3 cup pine nuts (or walnuts, almonds, cashews if they fit the budget better)
4 ounces goat cheese
Handful of dried cranberries or raisins
Chopped green/spring onion
4 cups baby greens
4 cups baby spinach
Balsamic vinegar and brown sugar
Directions: WEAR LATEX GLOVES UNLESS YOU WANNA LOOK LIKE A VAMPIRE!
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.
Wash and dry the beets and trim off the ends. Take a large sheet of aluminum foil, 12x18, and double it over. Put the beets in the middle, drizzle with olive oil and season with the salt and pepper. Bring the sides of the foil up around the beets to make a pouch. Put in the hot oven and bake until the beets are tender, about 1 hour 20 minutes. Remove from the oven and let cool. When cool enough to handle, gently peel off the skin and slice into julienne pieces, about 2 inches long by 1/2-inch thick. Chill until ready to use.
Option 2 (faster)
Trim and quarter the beets (skin on), season and microwave for 10-15 mins depending on size in an airtight casserole with some water (you can save it for Borscht stock).
Remove from microwave and plunge into an ice bath to stop cooking and chill.
Peel and slice or chop to your preferred size.
Lightly toast the pine (or other) nuts in a small sauté pan over medium-high heat for 2-3 minutes. Remove to a plate or small bowl and cool. Slice the goat cheese into 1/2-inch rounds and press the nuts onto both sides. Chill until service.
Add 1/2 cup good balsamic vinegar and 2 tablespoons of brown or muscovado sugar to a non stick pan, bring to a boil, then slow down to a simmer to create a syrup.
When ready to serve, lightly toss the baby greens and the spinach together in a large bowl and dress the edge of your serving bowl with your favourite balsamic vinaigrette dressing. Toss the greens and then top with the beets and the goat cheese rounds. Drizzle with additional balsamic reduction and serve immediately.
Check them out on YouTube. You'll be glad you did!
PS ~ For all of you slackers who have not yet bought my book, here are the links to Amazon UK and US. And for those that HAVE, I thank you from the heart of my bottom and ask that you give me a splendid review!
Featured Artist - Elizaveta - Hero EP
Elizaveta considers herself a musical alchemist.
"Alchemy and music are similar in nature," she explains. "You throw seemingly disparate elements in a pot. If you do it correctly, they’re transmuted and something else takes form. I take opera, multiple voices, electronic beats, piano hooks, add a pop melody and create a song. Shake it all well, make sure it’s emotional and really means something, and you get something special".
We are pleased to announce that our musical friend Elizaveta has just released a new EP "Hero"
You are listening to: HERO from her recently released EP.
