Welcome to the Volume 25 edition of the McCartney Newsletter. created by: Martin Nethercutt
With the Soccer World Cup in Brazil (you know I was going crazy when Germany lifted the trophy,) our recent trip to Austria and Munich, and the numerous other McCartney Multimedia, Inc. projects and events, we haven't had time to catch our breath. Now that we have a moment, we can tell you all about the last few months' activity.
The Magical History Tour hits Europe
A Day in the Life of The Magical History Tour.
We set off to fly through 5 countries in one day.
Our journey took us from L.A. to Vancouver, on to a predictably rainy London, thru Munich and then by car just 90 minutes to Thiersee, a very small town in Austria.
We woke up to a magnificent landscape at The Armona Alpine Resort and Spa, which is also a medical rehab clinic… with this view and a gourmet restaurant.
Part of the VIP tour guest's package included a "Cooking with Ruth McCartney" dinner at the "Gerüchte Küche" (The Rumour Kitchen) and in the spirit of the 60's, the menu was printed on vinyl records as a commemorative souvenir.
Chef Flo Gstrein prepared an outstanding 8 course dinner and then, The Cavern Beatles who had just flown in direct from John Lennon Airport in Liverpool, joined the diners for an impromptu sing-along. They're The Original Cavern Club house band, and a bunch of fun guys as well as great musicians.
Rehearsals of the band took place the next day at the "Passionsspielhaus" which is in use only every 5 years for religious passion plays. but they made an exception for The Magical History Tour Show.
The house was packed and a splendid time was had by all.
After a post show visit to the Kala Alm, it was time for us to leave this lovely place in Austria and head up to Munich, then Madrid and back to LAX.
After our Austrian show in Thiersee, we travelled to Munich, Germany to visit with some dear old friends and family. It was also time for Angie to fly to Liverpool to visit with her sister Joan and cousin Peter. Angie went down to the Cavern Club where she handed the boys from The Cavern Club Beatles band their laundry, which they had left behind in Austria after the gig.
In the club Angie lost her Platinum American Express card. Imagine if someone found a card at The Cavern with the name McCartney on it! She realized within hours and was able to cancel it before someone could go on a spending spree.
It was the day after the opening game of the Soccer World Cup in Brazil, (which, did I mention it already, Germany won their 4th star,) when we all flew back home to Los Angeles on Iberia Airlines. The food was fantastic in business class, little tapas accompanied by some very fine Rioja.
We all arrived safely and it was just in time to take in the World Cup!

The Car Care Company
A real life example of branding a new business one on one.
Image is Everything.
And it begins with your brand name. We worked with our client Ivan Cuevas to brand his excellent idea for a new breed of auto maintenance shops. Once the vehicle has gone out of warranty, and the dealer experience becomes a faded memory, there are not many clean, upscale choices in the repair and maintenance industry.
Sure, there are chains of places that just fix mufflers. Or tires. Or can change your oil in a flash but trying to find a one-stop-shop that values your time, explains the process and respects your budget by sticking to their quote is a difficult challenge.
Enter: The Car Care Company.
The name says it all. Simple. Clean. Precise. Contemporary. Efficient.
Then, we can up with the byline "You're Good To Go" and of course, the brand wouldn't be enforceable without a strong logo. We prepared over 100 layouts for Ivan, and subsequently, polled a small focus group and chose the identity pictured.
If you have any branding, logo, or content/copy issues, please get in touch. We'd love to help.
We recently undertook an aggressive search engine optimization (SEO) keyword and listing project for this small-batch, handmade gluten free bakery based here in LA. Before the project, they were on page 8 of Google. Now they are on page 1. Contact us if you feel Google/Bing challenged and let us take a look at your code.
Coco Kislinger's life long love for baking was so strong that she ditched law school to attend Le Cordon Bleu in Paris. Then the unthinkable happened: she developed an intolerance to dairy and a sensitivity to gluten. Luckily Kislinger is a plucky sweet-toothed survivor. She tweaked her high level culinary skills to create small batches of baked goodies using a restricted gluten and dairy free list of ingredients. Her not too sweet treats are sure to cure any sweet or chocolaty cravings.

McCartney Group GmbH - Vienna, Austria
McCartney Group GmbH takes Voka to Los Angeles Sir Paul McCartney's stepmother and sister, Angie and Ruth McCartney, are avowed fans of Voka and will exhibit his art in Los Angeles in October/November.
On the occasion of the premiere of the Magical History Tour in Tyrol they met for the very first time. "It is an honor for me to be represented by the McCartney Group in California, and I'm impressed by the warmth and respect Angie and Ruth show me." the artist proclaimed.
Ruth adds, "Los Angeles is known for its entertainment, film and music scene, but as far as fine art, LA is a stepchild among the big cities like New York, Miami, Houston and Chicago. I think, when Voka comes to California with his artwork and visions he will help to bring LA closer to the artworld.“
Draganja/Mergea Cap Giant-Killing Run In Hamburg
by ATP Staff | 20.07.2014
Marin Draganja and Florin Mergea won their first ATP World Tour team title in style on Sunday, capping their giant-killing run by upsetting top seeds Alexander Peya and Bruno Soares 6-4, 7-5 in the final of the bet-at-home Open in Hamburg.
"I still don't believe it," said Draganja. "To win our first title at an [ATP World Tour] 500, I don't know what to say. They are a very, very strong team. They don't give you any easy mistakes; you have to win all the points. We managed to stay strong until the end."
The Croatian/Romanian duo earned 500 Emirates ATP Doubles Team Rankings points and shared €84,970 in prize money. En route to their maiden final together, they had also ousted fourth seeds Jamie Murray and John Peers in the semi-finals and second seeds David Marrero and Fernando Verdasco in the quarter-finals.
In their recent tour-level debut, Draganja and Mergea had reached the semi-finals at Roland Garros (l. to Granollers/Lopez), having beaten Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjic in the quarter-finals.
"We barely got into [the draw] here; we were lucky to get in," said Mergea. "We've beaten some incredible teams along the way and we're really happy with the way we've played. It's a continuation from Roland Garros. We're thrilled to get the win today.
"It was a very difficult match. It was pretty hot out there today. We tried to focus on our serves and then we were happy when the breaks came."
The 23-year-old Draganja won his first ATP World Tour doubles title, having finished runner-up in his maiden final alongside Mate Pavic in Chennai at the start of the year. Mergea, 29, captured his third trophy and second of the season, following victory in Vina del Mar with Oliver Marach as his partner.

Never Underestimate a Girl with Nothing to Lose. Based on the groundbreaking, cult classic anime, KITE tells the story of Sawa (India Eisley,"The Secret Life of the American Teenager," Underworld: Awakening), a young woman living in a corrupt society where crime and gangs terrorize the streets. When Sawa's mother and policeman father are found victims of a grisly double homicide, she begins a ruthless pursuit for the man who murdered them. With the help of her father's ex-partner, Karl Aker (Samuel L. Jackson, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, The Avengers, Django Unchained), and a mysterious friend from her past (Callan McAuliffe, The Great Gatsby, I Am Number Four), she becomes a merciless teen assassin, blasting her way through the dark world of human trafficking only to uncover a devastating truth. UNICEF AMBASSADOR CALLAN MCAULIFFE TAKES CHILD RIGHTS MESSAGE TO SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS
UNICEF Australia will welcome its youngest National Ambassador Callan McAuliffe home to take a child rights message to music festival Splendour in the Grass this month. The 19-year-old, LA-based actor will bring a child rights message to the all-ages Byron Bay music festival and call on festival goers and artists alike to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.
Last year McAuliffe celebrated global success in the Baz Lurhmann film adaption of The Great Gatsby and was named a UNICEF Australia National Ambassador in November, at the same time his lead role in Beneath the Harvest Sky was premiering to the Toronto International Film Festival, in Canada.
McAuliffe joins fellow Australian actor Geoffrey Rush, author Tara Moss, singer Jimmy Barnes, children’s entertainers The Wiggles and children’s author Morris Gleitzman in endorsing and promoting UNICEF’s message to reach every child, everywhere with the good health, nutrition, care, safety, education and freedoms that are their right.
McAuliffe said he was excited to be joining UNICEF’s family of global ambassadors to raise the profile of children’s rights both here in Australia and around the world.
A night at the Grammy Museum
with Lawrence Juber
It was a rare treat to catch up with Laurence and hear his stories, not to mention his breathtaking guitar chops at the Clive Davis Theater inside LA's Grammy Museum.
From Grammy page:
First internationally recognized as lead guitarist in Paul McCartney's band Wings, Laurence Juber has since established himself as world-renowned guitar virtuoso, composer and arranger. Juber, known to his fans simply as “LJ,” has released 22 solo albums during his five-decade career.
The latest, Under an Indigo Sky (Solid Air Records) is a jazz/blues-tinged solo guitar recording that was mixed at Hollywood’s legendary Capitol Studios by top engineer Al Schmitt. Juber’s LJ Plays The Beatles album was voted one of Acoustic Guitar Magazine's all-time Top Ten albums. His solo arrangement of "The Pink Panther Theme” was featured on the Best Pop Instrumental GRAMMY-winning album Henry Mancini: Pink Guitar. His performance of "Stand By Me" was heard nationally in a Diamonds Are Forever commercial. As a studio musician, he can be heard on recordings from artists as diverse as Dan Hicks & the Hot Licks, Paul Williams, Seal and Barry Manilow, and he is featured on the soundtracks to hundreds of TV shows such as Home Improvement and movies including the Academy Award-winning Dirty Dancing, Good Will Hunting and Pocahontas.
Juber’s latest endeavor, Guitar With Wings, is a lavishly produced book co-written by music historian Marshall Terrill and featuring a foreword by Denny Laine, that tells the story of Juber’s career told through his own words. Through candid, never-seen-before color and black & white photos, vintage advertising materials, guitars, equipment, memorabilia and the six-string legend’s encyclopedic musical memory, Juber takes readers on a unique, rock-n-roll journey. Please join us as we welcome Juber to the Clive Davis Theater for return of our popular Great Guitar series. Juber will be joined by Vice President of The GRAMMY Foundation and MusiCares, Scott Goldman, for an in-depth discussion. After the interview, Juber will perform a selection of songs and will sign copies of Guitar With Wings.
We were so spoiled with excellent food in Austria that we thought we should also give a shout out to the best Sausage and Kraut restaurant in downtown Munich. The Nürnberger Bratwurst Glöck'l am Dom. It is a very well hidden secret that they not only serve fantastic sausages and pretzels, but also have the best beer in town!
If your travels ever take you to Munich, this is a must visit for a hearty lunch. It's near the Marienplatz, and you'll find it in a little side passageway.
For those of you who speak and read German, here's the original text from their web site:
Wash the oranges and lemon thoroughly. Zest the lemon. Cut the oranges into 1/8-inch slices using a mandoline, removing the seeds as you go. Stack the orange slices and cut them into quarters. Place the oranges into an 8-quart stainless steel pot. Add the lemon zest and juice and the water to the pot, set over high heat and bring to a boil, approximately 10 minutes. Once boiling, reduce the heat to maintain a rapid simmer and cook, stirring frequently, for 40 minutes or until the fruit is very soft.
While the fruit is cooking, fill a large pot (at least 12-quart) 3/4 full with water, set over high heat and bring to a boil. Place 10 (8-ounce) mason jars and rings, canning funnel, ladle, and tongs into the boiling water and make sure the water covers the jars by at least an inch. Boil for 10 minutes. Turn off the heat, add the lids and leave everything in the pot until the marmalade is ready.
Meanwhile, place a small plate in the freezer. Increase the heat under the orange mixture to return to full boil. Add the sugar and stir the mixture continually, until it reaches 222 to 223 degrees F on a deep-fry or candy thermometer, and darkens in color, approximately 15 to 20 minutes. You may need to adjust the heat in order to prevent boil over. Test the readiness of the marmalade by placing a teaspoon of the mixture onto the chilled plate and allowing it to sit for 30 seconds. Tilt the plate. The mixture should be a soft gel that moves slightly. If mixture is thin and runs easily, it is not ready.
Remove jars from the water and drain on a clean towel. Place a canning funnel onto the top of 1 of the jars and ladle in the marmalade just to below the bottom of the threads of the jar. Repeat until all of the mixture has been used. The amount of marmalade may vary by 1 to 2 jars. Wipe the rims and threads of the jars with a moist paper towel and top each with a lid. Place a ring on each jar and tighten.

Featured Artist - Justin Dzuban - Shakedown
Singer-songwriter and Producer Justin Dzuban was born in the suburb of Delaware, Ohio, twenty miles north of the city of Columbus. He has been playing music his whole life, starting in First grade with the violin. After spending 3 years in band playing trumpet, Justin recalls the feeling of wanting to explore other instruments and find an expression that felt more natural. Having been influenced by so many guitarists from the 60's to 70's, the guitar was inevitable.
"My objective was to focus on what I love about music and what the songs mean to me in the sense of time and space in my life. I also really enjoy older recordings where the instrumentation is simply arranged for the listener. I find layers of instruments can really give the listener a picture of how the artist hears things but I didn't' want to take away the essence of the songs and replace the space with information that dilutes the quality of the message. The subtleties and textures of the human touch are really what draw me into music and styles that I enjoy so I wanted to be true to my rudimental passion of music for this album. Our drive and influences can vary from year to year so my goal with "Shakedown" was to capture an organic, old school, yet bitchin' sound of the recordings that people found familiar but original".
"I purchased a Blackspade um17 tube mic and a modified GAP 73 mic preamp, and recorded everything on the album with that one channel with the exception of the kick drum during the percussion recordings."
