Welcome to the Volume 26 edition of the McCartney Newsletter. created by: Martin Nethercutt
Shana Tova! Happy Jewish New Year 5775!
It's been a very busy few months since our last edition. Lots of travel, lots of new sites, lots of new products, clients and business connections. We know from your feedback that you enjoy our quarterly newsletters, so we won't keep you waiting, here's what happened:
On the Road (again and again...)
From Albany, New York to Minneapolis, Minnesota.
We set off on another Ruth McCartney "Big Data" speaking engagement on behalf of the American Accounting Association, courtesy of Julie Smith David. This time our travels took us to Albany, New York (AAA Eastern Region) and Minneapolis, Minnesota (AAA Midwest Region). Since we haven't been to these fine cities before, here's a little recap of the sites:
Albany, New York
Is it ever too early for beer?
October is a lovely time of year to be in Albany, New York. The weather is “just right” and leaf-peepers have a sea of fall colors to bedazzle them, and a bevy of food and entertainment options if you know where to look.
We like to try new foods, so we’re excited for the Belgian offerings at The Merry Monk. For a bite of seafood heaven, swing over to Jack’s Oyster House.
There’s fine Italian offering to be had at Cafe Capriccio. There’s also many fun variations and twists of American food to be sampled at Taste, Franklin’s Tower, and The Hollow Bar and Kitchen.
To soak in some true beauty, don’t miss out on the Albany Institute of History and Art and the New York State Museum. History buffs can take in guided tours of the New York State Capitol Building and Nelson A. Rockefeller Empire State Plaza. Those looking for some outdoor fun may enjoy Washington Park. Lastly, if you need a nice gift to bring home, don’t miss Lark Street Shopping and Dining, just two blocks away!
Minneapolis is a hidden gem, an artistic gateway between the two coasts. Half way between the entertainment hubs of New York and Los Angeles.
No wonder that there are many artists and musicians now live in Minneapolis.
After Ruth's early morning speech, we headed down to the Guthrie Theater and took the "backstage" tour.
The Guthrie Theater opened on May 7, 1963, with a production of Hamlet directed by Sir Tyrone Guthrie, the theater's founder. The idea of the theater began in 1959 during a series of conversations among Guthrie and two colleagues Oliver Rea and Peter Zeisler who were disenchanted with Broadway. They wanted to create a theater with a resident acting company that would perform the classics in rotating repertory with the highest professional standards.
Coming out of the Guthrie we visited the old flour mill with an attached farmers market and after a nice walk across the Mississippi, we had lunch at the Aster Cafe along the river front.
(See Restaurant of the Month section)
We spent our evening with dear old and new friends, Joey Molland (Badfinger) and Phil Solem (The Rembrandts), discussing music business over a nice pint at the BritPub close to our hotel.
Thanks to all the organizers and participants for making us so welcome in both Albany and Minneapolis.
McCartney Multimedia Products & Services Paula Abdul launches new website.
(by Christian Volquartz, VP of Operations)
The new PaulaAbdul.com website took 6 months of development time.
Unique and important features include a responsive design so it will look great on desktops, tablets, and mobile devices.
Another unique element of this site is the new auto video content which is visible on the homepage and the bio page. This new feature is quickly becoming one of the hottest trends in forward thinking web development. It's short video content that autoplays without audio to bring visual motion and life into a web design layout that for the most part has traditionally been made of static imagery. Static imagery is still great to use but moving images and video content as part of the web design is just so much cooler to look at. Additionally this website has been developed so that the video content will automatically display the correct video file format for any of the major desktop browsers most commonly used today.
This autoplay video content feature creates a whole new dimension in terms of how to design for the web to make content and brands more visually appealing and entertaining for the website visitor.
Additional tools are of course our very own iFanz.com newsletter eCRM system and all the social tools necessary to make all content on the PaulaAbdul.com website as social as possible.

The Fest For Beatles Fans
October 10th saw the opening of a 3-day weekend at the LAX Marriott of The Fest for Beatles, their first in 14 years on the West Coast. it was Ruth's and my wedding anniversary, when we usually sneak off for a day, but this was an event not to be missed, and Angie was delighted to catch up with many old and new friends, including Freda (Good Ol' Freda) Kelly, Julia Baird (John Lennon's sister), Billy J. Kramer, Peter Asher, Laurence Juber, Denny Seiwell & Denny Laine (3 Wings Alums), Seth Swirsky, Joey Molland (from the Badfinger days), and Nancy Lee Andrews, with her amazing Ringo photographs, and the ebullient Jon Keats of Cavern Club fame who had everyone in stitches. They held something called "Scouse Council" which Angie and Ruth joined, and although the running time was scheduled at 45 minutes, they practically had to be hauled off almost 2 hours later (where's the hook when you need it?) and a great time was had by all.
The Lapidos family worked their usual magic in getting about 16 areas of the hotel all gussied up in Beatles related decor, and the fans came from far and wide for a real old ding dong attending panels, musical performances, Beatles flea markets, etc. Angie sold lots of her tea, and is sending a donation to the Linda McCartney Breast Cancer Research Centre in Liverpool.
Raimund Carl, our Austrian partner from www.mccartney-group.com, Vienna flew in for a few days, and was blown away by the magnitude of such an event and went back home with his head spinning and lots of ideas mulling over.
Magical History Tour (update)
We did a showcase for a gaggle of booking agents (that is the collective noun for booking agents right?), at The Canyon Club in Agoura Hills just north of LA recently, which generated a lot of interest, and was attended by many of our old faithful friends too. Radio personality, Mimi Chen, acted as our "Johnny Carson" and we even had one fan, Rich Pell, fly in from New Jersey for the event. Now that's what you call a die-hard fan!
Thanks to Ric Wetzel and company we had our own motorhome backstage, where we entertained the V.I.P.s and the obligatory after party.
Thanks also to Kim Ludwig for making us so comfortable!
We have contracted to do appearances in various parts of Austria in March and April of 2015, including one at Obertauern, where The Beatles filmed their ski scenes for HELP! They are having a Beatles Week, conceptualized by McCartney Group Vienna to commemorate that time, which undoubtedly put their beautiful resort on the tourist map.
And Angie and Ruth and ! are invited to a grand Charity Ball at Vienna's Hofburg Palace for Dancer Against Cancer in April too, so the first quarter of next year looks pretty exciting. Not to mention we will be taking our shoes off in several airports globally...
More information on this in the upcoming newsletters, so stay tuned!

Angie's 85th Birthday in Las Vegas
We recently celebrated Angie McCartney's birthday in Las Vegas Nevada.
"I was fortunate enough to spend my 85th Birthday in Sin City (Las Vegas to you!). The trip combined business and pleasure, and we spent time with our new Vegas client's exciting project and plans for the upcoming launch, and even included a few video shots of Ruth and I on the Observation Deck of The Polo Towers, with a magnificent view of the Strip, during the 3 days of the Rock 'n Roll Marathon, in which more than 35,000 participants joined to raise funds for their favourite charities. Many were dressed in costumes ranging from Seven Dwarfs, to Charlie Chaplin, to Marilyn Monroe, to Astronauts, football players, and even a Ninja or two. It was all jolly good fun, and my birthday culminated in time spent in The Monkey Room at The Rio with dear Penn & Teller. I took them some of my organic teas, and they graciously posed for photos, one of which you can see here.
We ate, we drank, we laughed, we slept (yes, even I managed to get 7 and 8 hour stretches - unheard of for me), we hot tubbed, we ate some more, and put masking tape over the bathroom scale when we got home. So if this is being in my 86th year, I'm loving it."
Exciting times in the Vienna office. McCartney Group has been developing the Sports Division that has had quite some success lately.
Gilbert Schaller returns to the tennis world as coach for McCartney Sports.
For all who can read German, below is an article in the Austrian press.
Had a nice evening! This time the McCartney sports team was (nearly) complete with Florin Mergea and Marin Draganja playing Erste Bank Open (ATP Vienna) and Sam Weissborn, Kirill Dmitriev, Kati Mergea and Sandi Cebo as well as our fellows Dmitriev Popko, Matthias Angerbauer and Tomo Draganja with Kirill Dmitriev Delle Fave, Marin Draganja, Daiana Mergea, Florin Mergea, Gilbert Schaller, Sandi Cebo, Matthias Angerbauer and Dmitry Popko at Dachterrasse Zu Den 3 Herzen.
McCartney NetWork News - (because it's all about YOU)
From Maree "Tim Matheson and I celebrated the wrap of the last episode of HART OF DIXIE.
Rachel Bilson (the HART) is having a baby right this minute and wants to stay home to be a full time mom. The wind of change is blowing across the face of Bluebell USA!"
Callan was recently interviewed about his involvement with the Wolf Connection
a cause that's very dear to his heart. Watch the video below.
Our Mission & Vision
Why we exist? (Our Purpose)
All life on Earth is facing a critical time of transition and flux. Adaptability, survivability, and the sustainability of the human experience at local and global levels are increasingly dominating the public conversation. Human business as usual has lead to the loss of biodiversity, cultural diversity, individual fulfillment and happiness, and the weakening of the planet’s life support systems. We must develop a different conversation, we must find a new individual and collective way to think, feel, and behave if we are to survive as a species.
At Wolf Connection we believe that the deep and conscious understanding of our relationships with animals and the environment is paramount in our development as strong individuals, productive societies, and sustainable civilization on this planet. The Wolf Connection Ranch is the real-time, real-space lab where that believe is explored and tested.
1. To provide youth from all social backgrounds the education and skill-building alternatives that will promote the emotionally, mentally, and physically safe and supportive environments that will allow them to grow, thrive and become contributing community members;
2. To improve the quality of life of large canines by providing rescue, sanctuary, and behavioral enrichment in order to strengthen the bond and collaboration between humans and animals; and
3. To integrate the animal and nature experience in education, skill-building workshops, and other program experiences that build youth self-esteem, encourage personal growth and spiritual awareness, and help prepare them for the future with positive values, realistic goals, and the powerful life skills needed to achieve those goals.
From Jerrika: "I’m in a new web series (Send Me) that’s currently raising funds and producing a small movie (Solace) I’m quite excited about.
SEND ME is a web series about Gwen (Tracie Thoms), a woman who has the power to send fellow African Americans back in time to slavery as a character building measure. The power has been passed down through her family. Her best friend and confidant Katherine (Gabrielle Carteris) is keeping her secret."
From Shelly: "I've been writing all manner of Award Shows and Galas - just this month writing for Jay Leno, Dick Van Dyke, Jane Lynch, Conan O'Brien, Arsenio Hall and Joe Mantegna. Soon to return to the stage as GroovyShelly in the latest edition of ONE FINE DAY: THE GROOVY GIRLS OF THE 60s."
(from left to right:) Shelly Goldstein, Ruth McCartney, Freda Kelly
All the best wishes and blessing for the happy couple.

It was an unforgettable evening.
Thank you so much for having us. We had no idea what to expect, and if you've never been to a traditional Indian wedding, it will come as quite a shock. What a production! Big screen movies, food and bars as far as the eye could see and 550 of the couple's "closest" friends and family decked out in their gorgeous garb from the bride and her twin sister's wedding rental company BorrowItBindaas.com.
The Aster Cafe sits on the prettiest street in Minneapolis, under the trees along the Mississippi river. In the summer, come and sit in our courtyard and nibble on a salad or flatbread while sipping on one of our craft beers or signature cocktails while the accordion music makes you think you are in Paris. If it’s winter, cozy up with a vino and one of our house-made soups. We have beautiful spaces for weddings and events, we have live music, and we host interesting meetings and gatherings, and we’ve even been called “the best place to go on a first date” by City Pages.
Skyline views guaranteed!
Recipe of The Month
Sounds disgusting but even for us non-bakers, this is the easiest cake recipe I have ever discovered. Even Martin baked a version with canned peaches and pears and we re-named it Kassler Kuchen.
No complicated folding or fiddling, just dump, bake and enjoy!
1 (29 oz.) can pumpkin
1 c. sugar
1 (13 oz.) can evaporated milk
4 tsp. pumpkin pie spices
1/2 tsp. salt
1 box yellow cake mix
1 1/2 cubes (3/4 c.) butter, melted
1 c. pecans, chopped
Combine pumpkin, sugar, evaporated milk, eggs, pumpkin pie spices and salt in mixing bowl. Beat well. Pour into greased and floured 9 x 13 inch glass pan. Sprinkle cake mix over pumpkin mixture, then sprinkle on the pecans. Pour melted butter over all.
Bake at 350°F for 50 to 60 minutes until knife inserted in center comes out clean. Watch closely at end. Burns easily.
Serves 12 to 15.
Featured Artist - Phil Solem - The Rembrandts
Phil Solem - The Rembrandts
Having recently met up with Phil at the Brit's Pub in Minneapolis, I was reminded how big of a fan I was. I remember working in Munich and this song came on and changed my day. So, instead of announcing new artists all time, I thought it would be good to give a shout out to the Rembrandts.
You're listening to: "That's Just The Way It is, Baby"
Phil Solem is one half of The Rembrandts, the duo best known for the hits songs Just The Way It Is, Baby and I'll Be There For You. Phil also has a rock trio called THRUSH with bassist John Fields and drummer Michael Bland.
Currently operating out of Minneapolis, Phil writes and records solo material and music with THRUSH, in addition to writing, recording, and producing for other bands. Phil also continues to perform and record with longtime friend Danny Wilde in The Rembrandts.
